Advanced Laser Technology To Treat Acne Scarring - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

We will all get acne on our face at least once during our lifetime, after all it's a common skin disorder. Every spot that appears on the skin is a form of acne, but some people are more prone to acne outbreaks, which will quite possibly leave some scarring on the skin. Acne affects people of all ages, but it's most common in young people, especially during early puberty. These outbreaks are very common for both men and women from their twenties to their forties, although it does occur outside of this age range.

Lots of things can cause acne; a bad diet, stress and chocolate, but it's genetics, hormones, clogged up pores and bacteria which are the main causes. Usually, we think it's teens who have to deal with facial acne, but unfortunately lots of adults also suffer with it, with many people having acne breakouts in their thirties, forties, and even fifties.
  • As we grow up, the body starts to develop and this causes an increase in hormones.
  • Hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands to make more sebum and these glands can become overactive, causing the pores of the skin to become clogged with excess oil or sebum, causing acne.
  • Blackheads and white heads occur when plugs block the top layer of the pores.
  • When acne becomes inflamed the contents become hot and infected, causing the bacteria blockage to rupture through the skin's surface.
Correct medical treatment can treat acne scarring, but there are things we can do to help prevent the causes and discomforts of acne, before it has the chance to leave any scars.
  • Food allergies can cause some outbreaks of acne. Cut out the food you think might trigger your acne for a few weeks, and look for alternatives.
  • Harsh ingredients in soaps can dry out and irritate the skin leading to acne breakouts. Try using a gentle cleanser for the face and make sure you don't scrub the skin too hard.
  • Avoid touching your face, as throughout the day our hands pick up dirt, germs and bacteria, transferring to the skin when we touch our face, which can cause the pores to clog up. If you pop and squeeze your pimples, it will only make them worse because you're passing the bacteria from one part of the face to another and risk causing scarring.
  • Water is very important to the body, and drinking eight glasses of water a day will help to keep the body and skin hydrated. Drinking water will flush out the toxins in your system and cleanse your cells of built-up waste.

Selston Cosmetic Clinic uses the most advanced laser technology to offer a safe and effective way for the treatment of mild to moderate acne scars. Our dual wavelength laser system is non ablative (the surface of the skin remains unchanged) so there's virtually no healing or recovery time. The gentle lasers reach deep down to the collagen level of the skin and the precise therapeutic laser energy stimulates the production of collagen and elastin fibres. This dramatically improves the appearance of acne scars. Laser treatment has a proven safety record and gives lasting results and there are no side effects.

Laser Treatment For Unwanted Facial Hair - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

For women, one of the most embarrassing beauty issues is female facial hair, and whether it's dark, coarse hairs or a sprinkling of pale peach fuzz, it's always an unwanted problem. A bit of hair on the top lip, cheeks, hairline and chin is normal on women, although this hair is usually light and fair, making it quite difficult to see. It becomes a problem when the facial hair starts to get thicker and coarser, and that's usually when women look into having hair removal treatment.

Unwanted facial hair in women is a result of:
  • Hormone imbalance.
  • Genetic and ethnic predisposition.
  • Underlying medical condition.
  • Being overweight.
  • Perimenopause and menopause
Most women spend valuable time trying to get rid of unwanted hair., whether it's the hair on the legs, bikini line, eyebrows, chin or the upper lip. We use a variety of methods, waxing, plucking, shaving, threading and bleaching, which are all time-consuming, irritating and painful, with regrowth coming back quickly and often thicker than before. But there is an alternative. Laser hair removal treatment offers a permanent solution to unwanted hair, which will save you both time and money in the long run.

Laser hair removal is a gentle and effective way to permanently remove unwanted hair from almost any area of the body, and it not only leaves smooth, natural looking skin, it's also the safest and most effective way to create permanent hair reduction, and has become the number one solution to removing unwanted hair. Laser hair removal can give long-lasting results, and small and large areas can easily be treated quickly and effectively, compared to other methods.

Laser hair removal typically needs six to eight treatments but the exact number of treatments varies from person to person. The laser treatment is quick, a small area like the facial hair and the armpits can take as little as fifteen minutes, with larger areas like the back or legs taking up to forty-five minutes, depending on the size.

After you've had the laser treatment, you will experience shedding of the treated hair. At first, it might look as though the hair is growing back, but it's just coming through the skin and will shed. The shedding of the lasered hair begins a week after the treatment and it can last a for a further three weeks. To help speed up the shedding process you can exfoliate the areas gently as you shower.

Erase Spider Veins With Laser Treatment - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

As the weather gets warmer, that's the time most people want to wear shorts, skirts and bathing costumes, but unfortunately for those with spider or thread veins, the thought of wearing skimpy, more revealing clothes isn't an appealing one. Women of all ages can get unattractive spider veins on the face and legs, they are all too common and can cause a great deal of embarrassment. Until recent years, the only option was to cover the face with make-up concealer and the legs with trousers or tights.

Spider veins are very common, they appear on the skin in a reddish, purple and blue zigzag pattern. Thread veins are often a sign of getting older, because as the body ages, the valves in the veins weaken, and blood can collect, causing the veins to enlarge and become more visible. These veins can appear all over the body, but they are most commonly seen on the legs, face, ankles, feet and thighs. Spider veins are like varicose veins but smaller and they're also nearer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins.

Spider veins on the legs - before and after laser treatment

Patterns of red and blue veins that develop on the face are known as spider or thread veins and usually most women consider them unsightly to look at. Most spider veins don't cause any health problems, they're not painful but they're considered displeasing, especially on the face and many people use concealer to cover them up. So instead of spending large amounts of money on make-up to cover up the spider veins on the face, the good news is that there is an alternative permanent solution.

Thread veins tend to develop as we age, when our skin and blood vessels become less elastic, but they can also be associated with pregnancy, menopause, family predisposition, sunbathing or exposure to wind or extreme temperatures. There's no reason we should put up with unsightly thread veins, when there is such a simple solution to permanently banish those tell-tale signs of ageing.

Facial spider veins before and after laser treatment

The safest, most effective cosmetic medical treatments for leg and facial veins is laser treatment. A laser gets lightly applied to the skin directly above the spider veins, making the vein disappear. The energy from the laser gets absorbed by coloured tissues, such as spider veins, breaking them down. The closed and sealed vein is then dissolved and absorbed by the body. After treatment, the body slowly re-absorbs the veins. A laser treatment takes only fifteen to thirty minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

Get Rid of Facial Spider Veins with Laser Treatment - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

Spider veins are permanently dilated capillaries; tiny blood vessels which run close to the surface of the skin and look like fine red, or sometimes purple, wavy lines. They are sometimes called thread veins or broken veins and these highly visible tiny veins sit just under the surface of the skin and are very delicate. Damaging these veins might cause them to dilate and break, and once they are broken, the veins will stay that way and won't constrict back to their normal thickness or repair themselves.

Anyone can get spider veins, and while these veins do occur on the face, a great number of them also show up on the legs. Ageing causes the weakening of veins and skin, and the ageing skin can make the veins more noticeable. Hereditary predisposition is the most common cause of spider veins and if other members of your family have these veins, it's quite likely that you will develop them too. Facial veins can become more prominent as we get older, but there are actually six main triggers that can provoke them at any age.

These are:
  • Pregnancy
  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Temperature extremes
  • Too much alcohol
  • Facial injuries
  • High blood pressure
Scrubbing your face too vigorously or washing with water that's too hot can also cause facial veins. Age, lifestyle, rosacea and smoking can also play their part.

The safest and most effective treatment for spider veins on the face is with laser treatment. The cool tip of the laser is slowly passed over the skin directly above the veins, and the energy from the laser is preferentially absorbed by the coloured tissues. The energy causes the veins to heat up and collapse. Some people feel a tingling or stinging sensation, although most clients report feeling only minor discomfort. Clients can have an anaesthetic cream applied if desired, to relieve any discomfort. After the laser treatment, the body slowly re-absorbs the veins.

Laser treatment takes only 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated, and recovery on most people takes no time at all, although the skin over the treated area might be mildly sensitive for a few days after the treatment. The look of spider veins will greatly improve after just one treatment, however, to fully remove them most people will need two or three sessions. After the treated veins disappear, they will not re-occur.

Laser Treatment for Pigmentation & Hyperpigmentation - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

Feeling comfortable in your skin is a great thing, but how comfortable do you feel when your skin is less than perfect? Pigmentation on the skin can badly affect self-esteem and confidence, with women using concealers, foundation and colour correctors to cover up an uneven skin tone. While being able to cover up pigmentation is easy enough, sometimes, once in a while, it's nice to leave the face bare.
When pigmentation occurs, it shows up as patches of skin turning darker in colour, blotches, dark spots and circles, or general darkening of the skin, all causing an uneven skin tone. The reason we get pigmentation on the skin is down to a number of things such as genetics, hormonal changes, medical conditions and burns or spots. The visible effects of pigmentation can become more obvious with age, so earlier treatment can help with this and prevent any further damage.

As well as pigmentation, there is also hyperpigmentation, and this is when we get dark patches on the skin due to over-exposure to the sun. Hyperpigmentation is a concentrated increase in your skin's melanin, where patches of the skin become darker than the surrounding skin.
There are many reasons we get skin pigmentation including;
  • Increased sun exposure
  • Genetics
  • Medical conditions
  • Pregnancy
  • Trauma to the skin
  • Hormonal changes
You can get dark, patchy areas of skin from using sunbeds, because sunbeds give out a high dose of UV light, causing an excess production of melanin, making pigmentation show unevenly on the skin. There are several treatment options depending on the type of pigmentation problem.

Treatments for hyperpigmentation:
Chemical peels - these are an effective treatment option. A skin peel removes blemishes and dull cells from the surface of the skin, improving the texture and smoothness of the skin.
Microdermabrasion - treatments for mild exfoliation to deeper medical treatments translates into more impressive and lasting results. It's popularly used for the face but it's also great for the neck, chest and hands.

Laser treatment - targets pigmentation, breaks-up, it lightens deep sun damage and hormonal melasma, creating a more even skin tone.

The laser treatment for removing pigmentation is ideal to use on any area of the body. Pigmentation happens on areas of the body that are exposed to the elements, and is most commonly found on the face and hands. Laser is a safe treatment option and it won't harm the skin, the average procedure lasts around 30 minutes and most clients will notice a dramatic improvement in their skin after the first treatment.

Benefits of laser skin pigmentation treatment:
  • It's safe to use on the face, hands, neck and chest
  • There's no recovery time, you can return to normal activities immediately
  • It's effective - giving outstanding results every time
Prevention is better than a cure, so as pigmentation and hyperpigmentation is largely caused by over exposure to the sun, it's highly recommended that you wear a broad-spectrum SPF daily to keep your skin safe and stop any further damage occurring. If it's very hot and sunny, then wear a hat and don’t expose your skin to the sun during the hottest part of the day.

Remove Unsightly Facial Tread Veins With Laser Treatment - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

Your self-confidence can easily be destroyed if you are unhappy about your appearance. Redness in the face, especially around the nose and cheek areas is a common problem that affects men and women of all ages. We all want beautiful skin but sometimes that doesn't come easily. It takes a lot of time to maintain a flawless complexion, and working hard at having a clean, healthy, clear skin will ultimately give you lots more confidence, but it's worth the effort.

Facial thread veins, sometimes called spider veins, can sometimes be caused by sun exposure, smoking, excess alcohol, sometimes people have a family predisposition to them, but mostly they are just part of the ageing process. Many people suffer from these red or purple blood vessels showing on their face, and they might appear as blotches, small veins or a complex network of veins, but in reality these blood vessels are not veins, but permanently dilated and broken capillaries and because they are located close to the surface of the skin, they are highly visible.

There are things you can do to lessen or take away the spider veins on your face, and one treatment is a laser procedure, which is simple, safe and a quick way to remove them. Laser treatment takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area you need treating. A laser gets applied to the skin directly above the spider veins, and the energy from the laser is preferentially absorbed by coloured tissues. The laser energy causes the spider veins to first heat up, and then collapse. After the treatment, the body slowly re-absorbs the veins.

Most clients feel only minimal discomfort, maybe some tingling or stinging sensations, but a topical anaesthetic cream can easily be applied if it's needed. The treated skin might be slightly sensitive for a few days after treatment, but most people need no recovery time at all, and can return to their normal activities immediately after the treatment. The spider veins will look better after just one treatment, although in some cases, more than one session maybe required to get long-lasting results to get rid of them completely. Most people will need two or three courses of treatment, scheduled a month apart.

Removing visible facial spider or thread veins is now almost painless with the latest laser treatments, removing the thread veins, revealing clearer-looking skin. It's advisable to do lots of moisturising afterwards and sunscreen application is essential to protect the skin after treatment.

A Smooth Even Toned Clear Skin With Laser Pigmentation Treatment - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

Skin pigmentation is a common skin problem all over the world. The word pigmentation refers to discolouration of the skin, and it's more likely to appear on people with light coloured skin, than those with dark skin tones. Pigmentation can appear either on the face, or body, and it will appear more prominently as we age, causing many people looking for a way to improve it.

It's considered that laser skin resurfacing, also known as fractional skin resurfacing is a highly effective treatment to fade, or take away unwanted skin pigmentation and irregularities, including:
  • Acne scars
  • Freckles
  • Spider / thread veins
  • Sun damage

There are a number of reasons that pigmentation can become visible on the skin;

Sun exposure
Most pigmentation occurs as a result of overexposure to the sun’s damaging rays. The skin reacts to the UV (Ultra Violet) rays from the sun and the effects of sun-damaged skin will increase with age. The best way to stop pigmentation from occurring is to wear sun protection every day, especially on your face. Pigmentation can affect people of all ages and skin types.

Hyperpigmentation
There are cells in the skin that make melanin, which is responsible for the colour of the hair and eyes, as well as the colour of the skin. Extra melanin gets produced when the cells get damaged or are unhealthy, resulting in inconsistent dark colouration or blotches on the skin. An increased exposure to the sun will also darken any previous areas of hyperpigmentation.

Hypopigmentation
Pale almost white patches appear on the skin when there's a decrease of melanin. Vitiligo and albinism are skin conditions that cause hypopigmentation, which unfortunately, there are no cures for.

Trauma
Skin trauma, such as burns, acne, infections, or inflammation can cause increased pigment production. Skin peels and microdermabrasion when used inappropriately, and chemical treatments can have an adverse when incorrectly applied.

Hormonal pigmentation
Women taking oral contraceptive tablets can sometimes notice pigmentation occurring. It usually develops slowly shortly after beginning a course of oral contraception, or if you change brand or dosage strength, but it might also occur after taking them for a long time.

Curing pigmentation problems has become easier with new dermatology techniques. There are multiple options to remove the pigmentation wherever it is on the body or face. These treatments can easily be used to remove the dark blotches on the skin;
  • Chemical Peels Treatment
  • Laser Pigmentation Treatment
  • Microdermabrasion Treatment
  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy
Selston Cosmetic Clinic uses the most advanced laser technology, offering a safe, effective and easy way to treat irregular pigmentation. Laser skin pigmentation treatment is safe for the face, hands, neck and chest and achieves effective, outstanding results every time. There's no recovery time after treatment, and you can return to normal activities immediately.

Remove Unwanted Facial Hair With Laser Treatment - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

We go to great lengths taking care of our skin; by cleansing, toning, exfoliating and moisturising, then we spend lots of time applying expensive makeup, only to realise that unsightly facial hair is visible for everyone to see. Unwanted hair on the face is a common problem that affects lots of women, and there are a few things that cause this to happen. It could be hereditary or maybe because of your ethnic heritage. There are those who have excessive facial hair because of medical conditions or it could even be due to hormonal changes associated with the menopause.

Facial hair can appear on different areas of the face including;
  • Lip
  • Chin
  • Jawline
  • Sideburns
  • Eyebrows

Facial hair that's excessive, unsightly or unwanted is a cause for concern for most women and can lead to low self-esteem. Although it's common, unwanted female facial hair can cause embarrassment to women and really affect their self-confidence. Removing the hair is the best solution, although you may find that waxing and plucking facial hair can become irritating and painful, but if you’re not happy with shaving, plucking, or waxing, then laser hair removal is worth considering as an alternative option, as it offers long-term results.

Remedies and treatments include;
  1. Using shaving, waxing, threading and plucking techniques are time-consuming and temporary.
  2. Electrolysis permanently removes hair by using heat, but it's an extremely slow and painful method and could leave behind some signs of scarring.
  3. Reducing the growth of unwanted facial hair using medicated creams can also be used, although side-effects such as skin rashes and irritation may occur with this method.
  4. Another healthy remedy that can help to reduce unwanted hair is weight loss. There are some women who have noticed unnecessary facial hair growth appear because they are overweight and losing excess weight will help with facial hair reduction.
  5. Long lasting results can now be obtained with laser hair removal. This treatment is a better alternative, as small and large areas can easily be treated quickly and effectively, compared to other methods.

Taking away facial hair with laser treatment is a quick procedure that gives great results. The pigment in the hair follicle absorbs the laser energy and then this energy is converted to heat, causing thermal damage to the follicle without causing any harm to the surrounding skin, and this stops the hair growing in the damaged follicle.

With laser treatment, there's only minimal discomfort, usually just a minor stinging sensation to the skin upon application of the laser pulses, but topical anaesthetic cream makes any treatment more comfortable.

Laser Treatment For Active Acne - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

There's nothing worse than getting spots, and an embarrassing outbreak of acne, whether you're a pimply teenage girl, a spotty youth or an adult is never an ideal scenario. The people we meet on a daily basis will look at our face first, and if we have spots it can cause us to feel self-conscious. We can try to help prevent our acne from getting worse, by avoiding frequent face washing, we can use a mild soap or cleanser, limit the amount of make-up we wear and try not to squeeze any blackheads, white heads or spots.

Around 80% of teenagers will get some degree of acne between the ages of 13 and 18 years because of changes to their hormone levels, which cause the sebaceous glands to produce increased amounts of sebum that can block the hair follicles. Spots usually occur on the face, arms, back and chest. The most embarrassing place to get acne, is on the face, as you can hide back or chest pimples underneath your clothing, but your face is always on show.

It's easier to treat facial acne than body acne, but there's a bigger chance of flare-ups on the face re-occurring. Acne, which is also known as acne vulgaris, is a common condition caused by skin cells that don't shed properly, plugging the pores and causing oil and bacteria to become trapped inside. As the oil and bacteria accumulate, the skin becomes inflamed and swells outwards, forming white heads, blackheads and pimples. Many things, such as cosmetics, dust, pollution and even shaving are all things that can irritate your skin or clog your pores, and they can also bring bacteria to this area, which is responsible for spots.

At Selston Cosmetic Clinic we use the most advanced laser technology in acne treatment and this treatment is effective for adult and adolescent acne and various grades of acne - severe, moderate or mild. The clinic's American FDA approved state of the art laser system delivers green laser light through the skin's surface, triggering the body's natural bacteria fighting defences, and significantly reducing any current and future breakouts.

Most clients experience minimal discomfort and some may experience a minor stinging sensation on the skin as we deliver the laser pulses. We always offer a topical anaesthetic cream to make the treatment more comfortable and our advanced laser system has a cooled sapphire window on the tip of the laser scope to further protect and cool the skin.

Clinical data suggests that most patients find their acne will improve after about four treatments, two a week for two weeks. While many patients continue to improve in the months following treatment, some patients experience a plateau in their improvement. It might be necessary to have repeated treatments in the distant future to keep up the results.

Laser Treatment for Unwanted Hair - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

Many people have areas of unwanted hair that they want removing. So whether you are a woman with hairy legs or shock horror - a hairy upper lip or maybe you're a man with excessive hair on the face, chest or back, there are many ways to help remove unwanted hair.

Shaving - removes hair using a razor at the level of the skin, but hair will return in the following days. There's always the possibility that shaving will cause unwanted cuts and irritations.
Waxing - is a good alternative to shaving. This method is semi-permanent and removes the hair from the root. It will take two to eight weeks for new hairs to grow back in the waxed area. Waxing could be painful if used in delicate areas, and the price could prove expensive over time.
Electrolysis - can permanently remove hair but it's an extremely slow and painful method, and can sometimes result in scarring.
Laser - the pigment in the hair follicle absorbs the energy, this laser energy is then converted to heat, causing thermal damage to the follicle without harming the surrounding skin. This results in hair growth being stopped in the damaged follicle.

Selston Cosmetic Clinic uses the most advanced Laser Technology to offer a safe and effective way to reduce unwanted body and facial hair. Laser hair removal treatment is ideal, as we can treat small and large areas quickly and effectively, compared to other methods. Over the winter months we don't bare our legs much, so why not do your legs a favour, and get them ready for Summer. Imagine having smooth, silky legs without the hassle of shaving and waxing.

Laser can remove hair almost permanently from:
  • Upper lip
  • Chin
  • Forearms
  • Underarms
  • Legs
  • Bikini line
  • Back
Are you a good candidate?
Not all hair is suitable to have laser treatment. At Selston Cosmetic Clinic, we can use the laser on white, through to black skin tones. Generally for white skin, it takes around 6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart, and this usually results in 80% of hair removal. Darker or black skin may need around 8 treatments resulting again in 80% of hair removed. It's not possible to treat white, grey, and blond hair by laser.

Go to a reputable clinic
Always be sure that the clinic you choose has certified laser professionals. Check it has been in business for a significant amount of time and that previous clients are happy with their results.

After treatment
Once your treatment session is complete, you're free to resume your normal routine. Some might experience a slight redness on the treated area but this should resolve in a day or two. You should avoid sun exposure and be sure to wear sun cream every day following any laser treatment. Immediately after laser treatment, hair follicles might seem to grow for one to two weeks. Typically these are lifeless hairs and they will fall out quite easily.

Laser Treatment for Spider Leg Veins - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

Many people suffer from red or purple blood vessels on their legs, which are not veins but usually dilated capillaries, and these are commonly known as Spider Leg Veins. Getting these veins is part of the ageing process, caused by over exposure to the sun or you might simply have a family predisposition to them. Leg thread veins are very common, although lots of people feel that the dilated or broken capillaries compromise their appearance and undermines their confidence.

Superficial leg veins, occur when tiny veins congregate below the surface of the skin, causing red, blue or purple discolorations on the skin. Spider veins get their name from the shape of the visible veins, some are quite small, while others are more noticeable. Although they might make you feel embarrassed, they are harmless and any treatment done on them, is usually done for cosmetic reasons only. Spider veins tend to appear mostly on the thighs, ankles and calves, and are more common in women than men.

These spider veins are essentially enlarged superficial blood vessels, red to purple in colour. Leg thread veins can run in the family, appear following injury to the leg, during pregnancy or through hormonal changes and any job that requires standing for long periods. Selston Cosmetic Clinic provides the latest leading, safe and effective cosmetic medical treatments for spider leg veins.

Before the procedure, we use a topical anesthetic cream to decrease discomfort. Laser treatments involve minimal pain, however, whist we deliver the laser pulses to the treatment area, some people might experience a light stinging sensation on the skin. Leg vein treatments take roughly 15 to 30 minutes, the time varies, depending on the number of veins that need treating. We divide appointments for treatments into eight-week segments, and two treatments usually leave the best results. Downtime is minimal and immediate return to regular activities is allowed.

Help prevent spider veins by:
  • Avoid sitting or standing for long periods.
  • Poor blood flow and circulation cause spider veins. When sitting down, try to avoid crossing your legs for long periods, as this can cause the vein walls to weaken and spider veins to appear.
  • Try to avoid wearing high-heeled shoes, as heels put extra pressure on your legs, restricting the blood flow from the heart to the legs, and this limited circulation can cause spider veins to appear.
  • Raise your feet when you're sitting down. This will improve the circulation and help regulate the blood flow in your veins, reducing swelling in the ankles and calves, reducing the risk of spider veins.
  • Wear support tights. They help to stimulate your blood vessels and improve your circulation, and poor circulation often causes spider veins.
  • It's important to use sun cream to protect the skin on your face, but it can also help prevent spider veins from appearing on your legs, calves and ankles.
Infrequently, the treated area will be mildly swollen and sensitive for several weeks. Keep the area well moisturised and away from sunlight. You should avoid strenuous exercise and we recommend wearing support tights or stocks one week after the treatment. It takes about eight weeks for the treated veins to disappear.

It's not just teenagers who go through the agony of spots, as it's thought that one in five adults also suffer from acne. The embarrassment that many acne sufferers feel from having acne scars, can lead to stress, which may account for the amount of time people spend trying to find a solution to make the scarring less visible.

Even the mildest outbreak of acne can leave some scarring and severe acne can leave scars that are clearly visible and very difficult to get rid of. Scars appear when spots or blemishes burst or break the skin. Minor scars will heal naturally and should fade as time goes by, however, the deeper scars might take longer or if they are here to stay, laser treatment might be the answer.

At the Selston Cosmetic Clinic we use the most advanced laser technology which offers a safe and effective treatment of mild to moderate acne scars. Using our American FDA approved dual wavelength laser system, which is non ablative (the surface of the skin remains unchanged) with almost no healing or recovery time. The gentle lasers reach deep down to the collagen level of the skin, and the precise therapeutic laser energy stimulates collagen production and elastin fibres, dramatically improving acne scars.

The laser treatment time takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the treatment area, using a topical anaesthetic cream to make the procedure almost pain-free. We recommend six treatments, spaced 3-4 weeks apart and gaining optimal results after 4 to 6 months. Most clients experience minimal discomfort as the laser pulses treat the skin, some may experience a minor stinging sensation.

Our advanced laser system has a cooled sapphire window on the tip of the laser scope to further protect and cool the skin. You will be back to work in 4 to 6 days and the results are permanent. You can combine laser treatments with other skin improving treatments, such as :

Reality Stars & Botox - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield.

Reality TV Stars - Botox and Cosmetic Procedures.

What is it with all these reality TV stars and their obsession with cosmetic procedures? It would seem that they all feel the need to have a certain look. Whether it is inflated lips, foreheads full of botox, veneers on the teeth, breast enlargements, nose jobs and even bum implants - if it's available, they want it!
It would seem that as soon as the big pay cheques come rolling in, the cosmetic surgeons have been booked!

American TV shows like the "The Hills", which is set in California, are full of young women who are all perfectly good looking. For instance, 20 year old Heidi Montag, who at the start of Series 1 was the epitome of an All-American girl, blonde, slender and pretty. Fast forward 3 years and she hit the headlines for getting ten cosmetic procedures done in one day! Among the procedures were brow-lifts, ear-pinning's, a chin reduction, as well as a second rhinoplasty and second breast augmentation, all at the tender age of 23!

UK reality TV show "The Only Way is Essex" has an abundance of stars, from Amy Childs to Chloe Sims to Lauren Goodger, who are no strangers to cosmetic surgery. And whether it's vanity, peer pressure or just a quick fix, these girls just don't seem to have the ability to say - enough is enough! Bigger, be that lips, boobs, hair or veneers, is not always better!

Whilst botox, lip fillers, breast enlargements and the like are perfectly OK, reality stars don't seem able to grasp that they shouldn't necessarily have them all done in one job lot!

Quite a few TOWIE stars now have big regrets about the cosmetic procedures they've had done. Amy Childs admitted "I do look back at pictures and think I looked like a freak – I went overboard with my lips and looked like Pete Burns at one point"

Abi Clarke suffered a bad reaction to lip fillers, and her lips swelled so much she almost ended up with permanent facial damage. She said "I went in for a an exfoliation and the person who did that for me could also do botox and fillers so they suggested to do that for me"  Abi also admitted she hadn't done enough research into the beautician or the procedure.

So why do they do it? Is it a case of making too much money too quickly? being thrust into the limelight and not feeling like you compare to the other glamour girls? or maybe it's just that they are young, immature and easily influenced!

Cosmetic work is all well and good if you want to tweek your imperfections, a bit of botox for the wrinkles, plump up lips that are too thin, lipo away stubborn fat that just won't budge, after all, we all want to look the best we can. Moderation is the keyword!

Another keyword is research. Always check out your cosmetic doctor as you are quite literally putting your well being into their hands.
Make sure they are fully trained in cosmetic work and always have a consultation to discuss your needs and the outcome you are wanting to achieve.

Remember.... never be rushed into any cosmetic procedure, make sure you find a doctor you can trust and always choose a reputable clinic.

SmartXide Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield.

SmartXide - Anti-ageing and acne scarring.

There are many reasons that we are not satisfied with our face, hands and neck.
Whether it is acne scars, fine lines or wrinkles, pigmentation marks on the face, hands and décolletage or sun damaged skin - none of them boost our self confidence and we would all love to turn back the clock.

So if you want to lose years off your skin's appearance, tighten up sagging skin and rid yourself of sun damage and age spots - well, SmartXide is the treatment for you!

Selston Cosmetic Clinic uses the revolutionary SmartXide Dot laser system, which was awarded The Best Skin Resurfacing Laser In The USA. It has caused great excitement in the dermatology cosmetic surgery world because it really delivers results!

SmartXide is a treatment that is effective for all skin types, totally resurfacing your skin and leaving new baby pink skin underneath.

It will dramatically improve the appearance of your skin, tightening it by stimulating collagen and elastin production.
Deep wrinkles are softened and visibly reduced, leaving a new, rejuvenated you!

Clients are enjoying tighter skin, a big reduction in open pores and super smooth clear skin, as sun damage and blemishes are banished.

The SmartXide CO2 laser is very impressive, the treatment takes about an hour of your time and takes away about 10 years!! The SmartXide can tone and tighten your skin, reduce wrinkles and acne scarring and take away skin pigmentation.

So how does the SmartXide Fractional Laser work?

SmartXide DOT is a fractional Co2 laser system. Using the latest technology, Co2 lasers are able to stimulate and rejuvenate by targeting small areas from a small wand-like device that is passed over the treatment area. The laser creates thousands of microscopic spots and by hitting only small areas in depth during treatment it eliminates the usual side effects of laser resurfacing such as pain, scabs and swelling.

SmartXide DOT doesn't remove the entire skin surface, so skin redness after treatment only lasts a few days. SmartXide is quick and precise, and the whole neck and face can be treated in under an hour.

During the treatment the high energy laser damages the outer layers of the skin and as the skin heals they peel away. The laser also heats the dermis which stimulates new collagen production, and as new skin cells develop, the face will become smoother, firmer and more youthful in appearance.

You will probably see an improvement in skin tone and texture as soon as the redness fades after one treatment. Over several months you will see a continuous improvement in the texture and smoothness of the skin. Wrinkles, lines, acne scars and dark marks will be reduced as well.

The procedure is not painful and you can expect to feel a stinging sensation but that only lasts a few seconds as we use a topical anaesthetic cream that is applied before the treatment. Depending on how much damage there is to the skin and what end results are required, we will recommend a treatment program that suits you. Most people require 3 – 4 treatments, spaced 4 – 6 weeks apart.

Post-treatment redness only lasts for a few days and can be covered up with cosmetics. Some slight swelling may occur for a few days following the treatment and we will recommend the correct creams to ensure your skin is properly moisturised.

Call us for a consultation at the Selston Cosmetic Clinic and whether you go for a course or a one off treatment, you are guaranteed to be the proud owner of beautiful, rejuvenated skin!

Wart Removal - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield and Chesterfield.

Wart Removal

Warts are small rough growths which infect the top layer of skin and they often develop on the hands and feet. They vary in appearance and may develop on their own or in clusters. Warts affect particular areas of the body, for example, verruca's are warts that usually develop on the soles of the feet.

Warts are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and they typically occurs on the hands or feet but also in other locations.
Most people will have warts at some time in their life, although they tend to affect children and teenagers more than adults. Warts can appear at any age but are more common in older children and are uncommon in the elderly.

I'm sure that over the years we have all heard the numerous wart jokes.
Wart's the matter ?
Wart time is it ?
Wart's that thing on your face ?
All quite amusing..... as long as it isn't you that actually has the darned thing !

The appearance of a wart varies, depending on  its location and the type of virus that has caused it. Most warts go away after a year or two, but some can last for years or return after going away. When warts are located in areas that are rubbed against clothing or bumped frequently, they can become irritated and the skin around them can become painful and they can itch and bleed.

There are many types of warts and these include :

Common Warts - Common warts are firm and can be light grey, flesh-coloured, yellow, brown or grey-black. They most often appear near the fingernails and on the backs of the hands, but they can also appear on the elbows and knees. Common warts do not usually hurt.

Filiform or digitate wart - are most common on the face, especially near the eyelids and lips.

Genital wart - (venereal wart) is a wart that occurs on the genitalia.

Mosaic warts -  they are a group of tightly clustered warts, commonly found on the hands or soles of the feet.

Periungual wart - is a cauliflower-like cluster of warts that occur around the nails.

Plantar wart - (verruca, verruca plantaris) this is a hard painful lump, often with multiple black specks in the centre, usually only found on pressure points on the soles of the feet.

Now, if you have a wart or verruca, the first port of call should be the chemist for home treatments.
Creams and gels or freeze spays can be used to get rid of the wart, and there are numerous natural remedies you can look up online.

But if all that fails, then the Selston Cosmetic Clinic can definitely get rid of your warts for good !
We have several methods of wart removal at our clinic : Radio Surgery, Electrocautery and Laser Wart Removal.

Call us for a consultation and we can choose a method of treatment to suit your needs.

Facial Spider Veins - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield and Chesterfield.

Facial Veins

Spider veins on the face are something you see on many people and this is often a cause of great embarrassment.
They are placed prominently on the face, around the nose or cheeks and can cause great anxiety since they are not easy to hide.

What are facial veins :
Facial spider veins are tiny blood vessels which run close to the surface of the skin and look like fine red, or sometimes purple, wiggly lines.
They are sometimes called 'thread veins' or 'broken veins'  The tiny veins just under the surface of the skin are delicate.
Sometimes these veins dilate and break, the veins will remain that way and won't constrict back to their normal thickness or repair themselves.
While spider veins do occur on the legs, a great number of them also happen on the face, around the nose, cheeks, and chin.

Who gets facial veins :
Anyone can get facial spider veins.
Ageing cause the weakening of veins and skin, and the ageing skin can make spider veins more noticeable.

What causes facial veins :
Facial spider veins can become more prominent as we get older, but there are actually six main triggers that can provoke them at any age.
These are: pregnancy, chronic sun exposure, temperature extremes, excess alcohol, facial injuries and high blood pressure.
Also scrubbing your face too vigorously or washing with water that's too hot can also cause facial veins.
Age, lifestyle, rosacea and smoking can also play their part.

How do you treat facial veins :
Selston Cosmetic Clinic has state-of-the-art Laserscope Aura-i and Lyra-i laser systems to safely and painlessly treat facial spider veins.
The photo's show our amazing results.

The safest, most effective treatment for spider veins on the face is laser treatment. A laser is applied to the skin directly above the spider veins and the energy from the laser is preferentially absorbed by coloured tissues, such as spider veins.
The energy causes the spider veins to heat up and collapse. After treatment, the body slowly re-absorbs the veins.

Laser treatment takes only 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area to be treated and recovery on most people takes no time at all.
The skin over the treated area might be mildly sensitive for a few days after treatment.

The appearance of spider veins will greatly improve after just one treatment. However, to fully remove spider veins most people will need two or three sessions.
Repeat treatments are scheduled a month apart and after the treated veins disappear, they will not reoccur.

Rosacea Laser Treatment - Nottingham, Derby , Mansfield and Chesterfield.

Living with a skin condition can be painful. It is often progressive, embarrassing and uncomfortable for the sufferer. Many individuals with skin disorders experience emotional effects such as isolation, self-esteem issues and sometimes even depression.

Rosacea, or acne rosacea, is a skin disorder leading to redness and pimples on the nose, forehead, cheekbones, and chin. In some cases, rosacea may also occur on the neck, chest, scalp or ears. The inflamed pimples and redness of rosacea can look a great deal like acne but blackheads are almost never present. One of the first signs of rosacea is the tendency to flush or blush easily.

Rosacea is considered one of the most common skin disorders with a characteristic flushing that comes and goes. It is a condition in which certain facial blood vessels enlarge, giving the cheeks and nose a flushed appearance. It is a chronic and potentially life-disruptive disorder and is often characterized by flare-ups and remissions.

Rosacea can mimic other skin conditions, including acne and sunburn, earning it the nickname the great pretender. Celebrity sufferers of rosacea include Princess Diana, Prince's William and Harry, Cameron Diaz, Bill Clinton and Sam Smith.

Many have observed that the condition typically begins at any time between the ages of 30 and 50 and it is likely to affect people who have previously suffered from acne or severe acne.

Some people are more likely than others to get rosacea, but anyone can get this skin disease. There are strong signs that ethnicity is a factor in the potential to develop rosacea. People from Celtic or Scandinavian ancestry who have lighter skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes are particularly susceptible. Rosacea has often been called the "Curse of the Celts"

There is evidence to suggest that rosacea may be inherited and sufferers are likely to have someone in their family tree with rosacea. People of all colours can get rosaceaIt is said that women are three times more likely than men to get rosacea, particularly during the menopause. Hot flushes are one of the most common symptoms of menopause and some women find that they can also trigger rosacea for the first time. Unfortunately symptoms can persist after the menopause too.

Women, however, are not as likely as men to get severe rosacea.
Rosacea's effect on men shouldn’t be overlooked, especially in matters of the nose. In men, the nose is primarily affected and the nose may become large and disfigured (this is known as  Rhinophyma)

Primary Signs of Rosacea are :

Flushing
A lot of people with rosacea have a history of frequent blushing or flushing. This facial redness may come and go, and is often the earliest sign of the disorder.

Persistent Redness
Persistent facial redness is the most common individual sign of rosacea, and may resemble a blush or sunburn that does not go away.

Bumps and Pimples
Small red solid bumps or pus-filled pimples often develop. While these may resemble acne, blackheads are absent and burning or stinging may occur.

Visible Blood Vessels
In many people with rosacea, small blood vessels (spider veins) become visible on the skin.

At the Selston Cosmetic Clinic, rosacea can be successfully treated using the most advanced laser technology.
We have achieved astounding results as our before and after photo's show.
Before and after treatment

The laser treatment usually takes between 45 minutes to an hour with our clients experiencing only minimal discomfort and maybe a slight stinging sensation as the laser pulses are administered.

Four to six treatments are recommended, spaced three to four weeks apart.
Come for a consultation and see what we can do for you.
You will be delighted with the results.
