Sweating, perspiring, glowing - call it what you will, it's a completely healthy way to maintain our body temperature, because when we're hot, we sweat, and when the moisture evaporates, it cools us off. Sweating is a necessary function which controls our body temperature when we exercise and when we are in warm or hot surroundings. People also sweat when they're nervous as emotions can affect the sweat glands.
Excess sweating, also known as Hyperhidrosis is a condition which affects both men and women equally. It can occur on many areas of the body, causing embarrassment and low self-esteem and it can affect the way we live our lives.
- Some of the reasons we sweat are:
- Heat and humidity - hot or humid weather makes us sweat, and when the sweat evaporates, it cools us down.
- Exercise - when we exercise our body temperature rises, and sweating gets rid of the extra heat.
- Illness - fever is your body's way of fighting off an infection.
- Spicy food - spicy food contains capsaicin, which is the compound that gives heat to spicy food.
- Menopause - the drop in oestrogen affects your body's internal temperature gauge.
Any sweating from under the arms can cause embarrassment, but the real problem begins when normal everyday sweating becomes excessive sweating, which means that you produce far more sweat than your body needs you to. The body's cooling mechanism becomes overactive, producing four or five times the amount of sweat that's needed and when this happens it can really affect your confidence, self-esteem and limit your social life.
To help relieve this you can:
- Take a bath or shower once or twice a day.
- Wear clothes made of natural fibres, such as cotton or linen, especially in the warm months.
- Use deodorants with antiperspirants, to help decrease sweating.
- A change of clothing during the day can help your comfort.
Excessive sweating can now be easily and effectively treated with botox injections. The botox hyperhidrosis treatment involves injections of tiny amounts of botox, using a very fine needle in a grid like pattern over the affected area. Botox works by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands, and when the glands no longer receive the chemical signals, the excessive underarm sweating stops.
- Procedure time - 20 minutes
- Downtime - minimal
- Back to work - straight away
- Duration of results - 9-12 months
- Anaesthetic - none
Usually, most cases botox treatment takes effect within a matter of days and the results can last up to 9-12 months. The treatment can easily be repeated as often as it's needed.
